Iraqi parliament to meet to elect president soon: official

Iraq's parliament officially named Haider al-Abadi the country's new prime minister late Monday and approved most of the candidates put forward for his Cabinet amid mounting pressure to form an inclusive government that can collectively cap the advance of Sunni militants.

Protesters and political parties had stalled the parliament’s meetings numerous times when it tried to elect the president and the prime minister.

Mohammed Shamari said in an interview that the Coordination Framework called on the PUK and KDP to speed up the decision on the presidential candidate to form the government sooner.

He said if the PUK and KDP do not agree within two weeks, the coordination framework will call for a meeting to appoint the president.

Coordination Framework is the largest faction that has fulfilled its duty and appointed Mohammed Shia Sudani as prime minister, and said the House of Representatives is likely to meet next weekend to set a new president, Shammari noted.

Earlier, Abbas Amiri, a member of the Coordination Framework, said the Kurdish forces had been given ten days to agree on a candidate for the presidency.

Almost a year has passed since Iraq held its parliamentary elections. The country has remained divided over electing its next president and prime minister in the parliament.

Israeli Defense Minister announces 'complete siege' on Gaza

Earlier on Sunday, footage from both Ashkelon and Sderot cities also showed army tanks in the streets as they reportedly moved towards the border with Gaza.

On Saturday, Hamas launched its biggest attack on Israel in decades, firing thousands of rockets and sending fighters who infiltrated Israeli towns near the Gaza Strip. The group said its attack was in response to Israeli violations in the flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque complex in occupied East Jerusalem and increased settler violence.

At least 700 Israelis, including 73 Israeli soldiers, have been killed and over 2,300 others wounded in the attack, according to the Israeli Health Ministry.

Israel retaliated, with the Israeli army initiating Operation Swords of Iron against Hamas with a series of airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, killing more than 430 Palestinians and wounding at least 2,300 others.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to use all of Israel’s strength to destroy Hamas’ capabilities and “take revenge for this black day.”
